Siamese Flying Fox – Algae‑Grazing Freshwater Fish

The Siamese Flying Fox is an active algae grazer that helps control soft algae in freshwater aquariums. It’s often mistaken for the true Siamese Algae Eater, but the Flying Fox is known for its bold black stripe and gold‑toned body, adding both function and visual appeal to planted tanks.

What They Do

• Grazes on soft algae, biofilm, and leftover food

• Helps reduce algae buildup on plants, décor, and glass

• Actively explores the bottom and mid‑levels of the tank

Tank Requirements

• Minimum tank size: 30 gallons

• Water parameters:

  • pH 6.0–8.0

  • Temperature 70–79°F

  • Hardness 5–20 dH

• Prefers well‑oxygenated water with moderate flow

• Thrives in planted tanks with rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots

• Can become territorial as they mature; best kept singly or in larger setups with peaceful tankmates

Diet

They naturally graze algae but should also be offered sinking pellets, spirulina foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
