The Pagoda Snail (Brotia pagodula) is a peaceful, slow‑moving freshwater snail known for its striking, spiked shell and natural algae‑grazing behavior. Originating from fast‑flowing, oxygen‑rich rivers in Southeast Asia, this species adds both utility and visual interest to community aquariums.

What They Do

  • Grazes on algae, biofilm, and leftover food, helping maintain a cleaner substrate.

  • Acts as a natural scavenger, reducing organic waste buildup.

  • Peaceful and non‑aggressive, making them suitable for community tanks.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons for one snail; add ~5 gallons per additional snail.

  • Water Parameters:

    • pH: 7.0–8.0 (higher pH helps protect their calcium‑based shell)

    • Temperature: 71–82°F (22–26°C)

    • Hardness: Moderate to hard water to prevent shell erosion.

  • Environment:

    • Strong filtration and good water flow to mimic their natural fast‑moving rivers.

    • Sandy or fine‑gravel substrate for burrowing and comfortable movement.

    • Dim to moderate lighting, similar to their naturally murky habitats.

  • Behavior:

    • Solitary, calm, and mostly active at night.

    • May bury themselves during the day or when stressed.

Diet

While they graze naturally, they benefit from supplemental feeding:

  • Sinking algae wafers

  • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)

  • Occasional detritus‑based foods
